FERRUM, Va. -- Freshman Derek Mitchell has been named the Virginia Small College Men's Basketball Rookie of the Year, as voted upon by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.
2008 VaSID Men's Basketball College Division All-State Team
Mitchell earned the the award as well as second team All-State honors after averaging a double-double this season, 12.6 points per game and 10.7 rebounds per game for Ferrum.
Mitchell helped lead Ferrum to a share of the 2008 USA South Athletic Conference regular season title, earning second team All-Conference and USA South Rookie of the Year honors along the way.
D3hoops.com also named Mitchell its Men's Basketball South Region Rookie of the Year. He is the first player from Ferrum to earn the honor.
Ferrum finished 14-12 this season under Bill Tharp, the 2008 USA South Men's Basketball Coach of the Year. It was Ferrum's first winning season since 1997 and the first conference championship since 1995.
