FERRUM, Va. -- The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its spring sportsmanship awards, and Ferrum College has won the 2009 Men's Tennis Sportsmanship Award.
This is just the second time that Ferrum has won a USA South team sportsmanship award. The first was back in the spring of 2005, when Ferrum's men's tennis team also earned the honor.
Team members this season included senior Chris Brown, juniors Bob Dil and Matt Mellone, sophomores Alex Bradley, John Hartin and Lee Hartin, and freshman Romy Fajardo. Dill was Ferrum's designee to the 2009 USA South Men's Tennis All-Sportsmanship Team.
The men's tennis team finished the 2008-09 season with a 3-9 overall record under first-year Head Coach Lew Hege. The Panthers finished sixth n the USA South regular season standings with a 1-5 league mark.
The USA South sponsors sportsmanship awards for 11 of the league's 14 sports. For every sport, each team member votes for the teams he/she deems to have demonstrated the best overall sportsmanship throughout the season. Schools may not vote for their own team. The team garnering the most votes receives that sports' Sportsmanship Award. The school that wins the most individual sportsmanship awards wins the overall USA South Sportsmanship Trophy.
Mary Baldwin College won the overall 2009 USA South Sportsmanship Trophy. The Fighting Squirrels were chosen as Sportsmanship Award winners in women's soccer, volleyball and softball. Christopher Newport University also picked up awards in three sports, but Mary Baldwin had a higher ratio of sports won to the number of Conference sports sponsored. This is the first-ever USA South Sportsmanship Trophy for Mary Baldwin.
