FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College scored three runs late in the game to erase a 4-3 deficit and post a 6-4 USA South baseball win over Shenandoah University this afternoon at home.
The Panthers opened the game with a pair of home runs in the first inning; a leaf-off solo homer by
Travis Crump and a two-run shot by
Jesse Fuller.
Shenandoah grabbed a 4-3 lead after three innings, including Jesse Henry's two-run homer in the third. Ferrum would get a run back in the seventh inning to tie the game, then scored two more in the eighth for the win. In the eighth, Fuller doubled to right field and eventually scored the game-winning run on
Jason Butterworth's single. Butterworth would later score the insurance run on a passed ball.
Crump, Fuller and
Jason Parker each had a pair of base hits for Ferrum. Starter
Jon Wilson pitched eight innings to get the win. He allowed eight hits and one earned run, walked none and struck out eight.
Shenandoah (24-5, 4-4 USA South) got two hits each from Henry and Scott Van Dusseldorp. Gage Levac absorbed the loss for the Hornets, pitching an inning in relief.
Ferrum (11-11, 3-5 USA South) will be back in action Wednesday, April 8, at home against Methodist University. The USA South doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m. at Panther Field. The panthers then host non-conference opponent Bridgewater College Thursday, April 9, at 7 p.m.
