FERRUM, Va. -- Shannon Mark doubled to left field to drive in the winning run in the top of the 10th inning to lift Christopher Newport University to a 9-7 USA South baseball win over Ferrum College. Mark scored later in the 10th inning for the insurance run.
Ferrum trailed 6-5 heading into the bottom of the 8th inning and scored a pair of runs to take a 7-6 lead. CNU was able to plate the tying run in the top of the 9th on Parker Neal's sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Steven Lindemuth. Neal also had a solo homer in the 7th inning.
The Panthers were led at the plate by
Charles Beacom who went 2-3.
Caleb Dorton smashed a solo shot over the center field wall in the 6th inning for Ferrum.
Chris Malvagna was credited with the win, pitching the final 2.2 innings allowing one hit and no runs. Malvagna walked one and struck out three of the nine batters he faced.
Tyler Easterly absorbed the loss for Ferrum. He allowed three hits and two earned runs over the final two innings, in addition to walking one and striking out one.
Ferrum (7-2, 0-1 USA South) and Christopher Newport (8-3, 2-1 USA South) will play again on Monday at Panther Field. The USA South tilt is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
