FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College fell 2-1 this afternoon at home to visiting Piedmont College in the Ferrum Men's Soccer Invitational at Penn-Roediger Field.
Piedmont claimed the tournament title with a 2-0 record. Ferrum was second at 1-1, and Warren Wilson College was third with an 0-2 mark.
Chase Rivers and Sydney Smith each scored first-half goals for Piedmont (6-2) in the 25th and 37th minutes, respectively. Smith assisted on Rivers' goal.
Ferrum's
Aaron Gustine converted a penalty kick at the 51:31 mark of the second half, but the Lions' defense held to preserve the win.
Chris Taylor played all 90 minutes in net for Ferrum, making six saves. Brian Gaid did the same for Piedmont, making four saves.
Rivers, Smith and Gaid were named to the All-Tournament Team from Piedmont, along with teammate Brian Reulbach. Rivers was the tournament MVP. Joining Gustine on the All-Tournamen Team from Ferrum were

Pat Fechter, and
Matt Janssen. Warren Wilson's Elan Gabriel and Ethan Frei rounded out the team.
Ferrum (2-5) returns to action Sunday, Sept. 26, at home against Guilford College. The non-conference match gets underway at 3 p.m.
