FERRUM, Va. – Ferrum College dropped a pair of non-conference baseball games to Southern Virginia University this afternoon at home. The Panthers fell 13-8 in the opener and 17-8 in the nightcap.
Daniel Alvarez was solid in the first game, going 4-4 with a double, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base.
Caleb Dorton and
Travis Crump had a pair of base hits each.
Chris Walker absorbed the loss, pitching the first four innings and allowing 13 hits and 10 earned runs. Southern Virginia's Jake Johnson, Andrew Snider and Josh Linn homered off Walker in the third inning.
Starter Darrell Brown earned the win, pitching five innings and allowing 10 hits and five earned runs. He struck out four and walked none.
In the nightcap, Alvarez and
Caleb Dorton homered for Ferrum, but the Knights had three big innings to offset anything Ferrum could do at the plate. Dorton's homer came in the first inning, a three-run shot, while Alvarez had a three-run homer in the fifth.
Travis Crump went 3-4 with a steal. Starter
Morgan Boles was credited with the loss. He allowed four hits, four earned runs and five walks over three innings.
Britt Dalton got the win for Southern Virginia (5-1), pitching the first four innings. He allowed seven hits, seven earned runs and three walks, while striking out two.
Ferrum (4-3) returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 22, at home against Guilford College. The non-conference game gets underway at 3 p.m. at Panther Field.
