HAMPDEN-Sydney, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College withstood an eighth-inning rally by Ferrum College to claim a 5-3 non-conference baseball win this afternoon at home. The game was the season-opener for both teams.
Trailing 4-0 after seven complete innings, Ferrum rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth, on singles by
Jason Parker,
Paul Jaglowski and
Wes Walker, but that was all the Panthers would get. Walker went 2-4 at the plate, driving in a pair of runs. Hampden-Sydney added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame for the win.
Chris Walker pitched 6.2 innings for the Panthers, striking out three and walking one. Sammy Holoway and
Peter Byron also had a base hit for Ferrum (0-1). Christian Hamlett, Beau Flinchum and Christian Clifton each had two base hits for the Tigers (1-0).
Ferrum (0-1) returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Roanoke College. The non-conference game begins at 3 p.m. in Salem, Virginia.
