FERRUM, Va. -- Less than 15 hours after dropping a 2-0 heartbreaker in 14 innings, Ferrum College beat #4 Christopher Newport University this afternoon 7-6 in USA South baseball action.
Christopher Newport led 3-0 after three innings before Ferrum exploded for five runs in the fourth.

Matt Reynolds each closed with a pair of hits for Ferrum. Iley went 2-4 with two runs, two RBI and a stolen base. Byron went 2-3 with a run and two RBI, and made a diving web-gem grab in center field to stop CNU from scoring a run in the seventh inning. Reynolds went 2-5 with a run.
Tyler Easterly earned the win, pitching six full innings and striking out three.
Justin Puentes earned the save, pitching the ninth inning without allowing a man to reach base. Javen Metz and
Adam Duncan pitched an inning each of middle relief.
Steven Lindemuth had a two-run homer in the second inning for the Captains (16-4, 4-2 USA South), while Shannon Mark went 4-5 with three RBI. Starter Greg Goldsmith, who came into the game with under a 1.00 earned run average, absorbed the loss. He pitched four innings, giving up five earned runs and walked four.
Ferrum (14-8, 3-3 USA South) hosts Emory & Henry College Wednesday, March 21, at 6:30 p.m. Coach Darren Hodges' team will then host Hampden-Sydney College Thursday, March 22, at 7 p.m. before hosting a weekend series against USA South opponent Averett University Saturday and Sunday, March 24-25.
