ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Ricardo Ciuffetelli belted a solo homer in the bottom of the 11th inning of the nightcap to help North Carolina Wesleyan College salvage a split of today's USA South baseball doubleheader with Ferrum College. Ferrum took the opener 4-2, then lost the nightcap 13-12 in extra innings.
Jake Perkins pitched all nine innings and struck out nine as Ferrum took game one.
Justin Cox had a two-run homer in the fifth inning, then
Jeff Swoope and
Clay Massie had RBI singles in the top of the ninth inning to drive in the final two runs.
Taryn Hayden and
Matt Reynolds both went 2-4 with a double, and Reynolds scored a run.
In game two,
Adam Duncan had a solo homer in the eighth inning for the Panthers.
Ty Comer went 3-6 and scored a run. Duncan absorbed the loss, pitching the final two innings and allowing two hits and the winning run. Starter
Dillon Weaver went six innings, allowing six hits, three earned runs and no walks with six strikeouts.
Ferrum (12-5, 9-2 USA South) will play the third and final game of the series at N.C. Wesleyan Sunday. The game was originally set to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Bauer Field, but the coaches have agreed on a 10:00 a.m. start in an effort to avoid rain being forecast for tomorrow afternoon.
