Action PhotosFERRUM, Va. -- Lynchburg College scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning, then hung on for a 6-5 non-conference baseball win over Ferrum College tonight at Panther Field. The Panthers led 5-1 after four innings, only to see Lynchburg score a run in the fifth and four in the ninth.
Charlie Thieringer earned the win in his first outing on the mound this season for the Hornets (20-5). He pitched the final inning and two thirds with no hits, runs or walks, and struck out three batters.
Manny Torres was saddled with the loss for Ferrum, pitching a third of an inning and allowing a hit, four runs (one earned) and two walks.
Ferrum (18-13) is back in action this weekend against USA South Athletic Conference opponent Huntingdon College in a three-game series Thursday through Saturday, April 10-12, in Wilson, North Carolina. The Panthers play the Hawks Thursday at 3:30 p.m., Friday at 11:00 a.m. and Saturday at noon.
The Ferrum-Huntingdon series will take place during the 2014 USA South Spring Sports Festival, in which the league will contest championship tournaments in softball, men's & women's trennis, women's lacrosse and men's golf. The winning team in all five tournaments will collect the league's autimatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III playoffs. The USA South's baseball regular season champion will earn the league's AQ and move on to the postseason.
