FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College baseball standouts
Garrett Dorton and
Drew Calohan have been named Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, by the USA South Athletic Conference for their play in five games last week.
A sophomore first baseman from Fincastle, Virginia, Dorton batted .571 for the Panthers last week, going 12-for-21 (.571) with three doubles, six runs, 12 RBI, a stolen base and a .714 slugging percentage. Also nominated for Player of the Week honors from around the league were Andrew Burden of Piedmont College, Joseph Calvert of Huntingdon College, Johnny Carpenter of Maryville College, Joel Johnson of Covenant College, Alex Kachler of Methodist University, Scotty McGuire of Greensboro College and Kyle Vidano of Averett University.
A sophomore pitcher/outfielder from Rustburg, Virginia, Calohan struck out 10 batters in Ferrum's 11-2 win over Averett March 4 at home. In seven shutout innings, he allowed three hits, no runs and two walks to earn his first victory on the mound this season. Also nominated for Pitcher of the Week honors from around the league were Joseph Hoelle of Greensboro, Carden Mellown of Huntingdon, Matt Tuggle of Averett and Ricky Ward of Maryville.
The Panthers talk a 4-9 record into a non-conference game with Roanoke College, Monday, March 5, at home. Game time is 5:00 p.m. at Panther Field.
