Panthers Fall to Cougars In Home-Opener

FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College dropped its home opener football game 35-12 to Averett University on Hall of Fame Weekend at W.B. Adams Stadium. The Panthers rolled out 308 total yards, while the Cougars amassed 366 yards.

THE BASICS
After Averett won the opening coin toss and elected to receive, Ferrum's Brad Green pooched a kick and the Panthers recovered the live ball and got things started early. The drive stalled out, but Green was able to split the uprights from 21 yards out, making it 3-0. Averett answered right back, using just 22 seconds to punch it into the end zone. Chase Nixon hauled in a Jacob Wright pass from Ferrum's 20 yard line for the game's first touchdown. Green's leg keep the Panthers in it early converting on his second field goal attempt, this one from 39 yards out, making the score 7-6. Wright took a house call of his own, scurrying in from 12 yards out to widen the Averett lead. Green would add his third field goal, from 29 yards, to end the  with a 14-9 score.

Quarter number two was the Panthers' achilles heel. Isaiah Grice caught a 62 yard pass from Wright and took it to the house to extend Averett's lead to 21-9. Joshua Tapscott rounded out the second quarter, punching it in from three yards out. The Panthers headed into the locker room trailing 28-9 at that point.

Brad Green made history for the Panthers in the third converting his record-setting fourth field goal of the contest, this time from 33 yards out, to make the game a two-score contest. In the fourth, Wright relieved all doubt, scoring his second rushing touchdown of the day with just over three minutes to play.

Zack Clifford was 17-32 through the air for the Panthers for 157 yards and two picks. Clifford also amassed 56 yards on the ground. Brian Mann collected 64 yards rushing, completed a pass, and recorded a tackle. Dazon Harrison hauled in six passes for 64 yards as the leading Ferrum receiver. Jacob Wright had a big day for the Cougars, netting 229 yards and two scores through the air on 16-23 passing and 43 yards and two scores on the ground. Tappscott was credited with 42 yards rushing and a touchdown. Grice led the Cougars in receiving with 118 yards on six catches. On defense, AJ Camp and Billy Higgins both collected four and a half tackles, with Higgins adding a fumble recovery for the Panthers. Hunter Hinson collected seven tackles for Averett. Conner Showalter picked-off two Clifford passes, collecting 24 yards on the two returns.

BEHIND THE WHISTLE
"We traded too many field goals for touchdowns. We cut the game to two possessions going into the fourth quarter, but couldn't get over the hump. Our players have great effort.
