Panther Football Falls In Road Contest

BRIDGEWATER, Virginia -- Ferrum College dropped an Old Dominion Athletic Conference football game Saturday afternoon on the campus of Bridgewater College, falling 53-10 at Jopson Athletic Complex.

Bridgewater set the tone early, scoring on the first drive of the game. Demetreus Jalepes would punch it in from two yards out to quickly put the Eagles up 8-0 after the two-point try was converted. Ferrum would answer back after capitalizing off of a Bridgewater miscue. Jaquice Sydnor forced a fumble on a punt return, and David Murray jumped on it for the Panthers. Ryan Beidleman hauled in a Zack Clifford from 17 yards out to bring the Panthers within a point. Bridgewater closed out the scoring in the first stanza when Chad Jones took a Jay Scroggins pass 14 yards for the score.

The second quarter saw Bridewater strike first again when Logan Weis split the uprights from 29 yards to push the Eagle advantage to 18-7. Albert Mensah added to the Bridgewater lead moments later, crossing the goal line from five yards out to make it 25-7. Bridgewater added another touchdown in the closing minutes of the half as Viante Tucker punched it in from 11 yards out. The Panthers executed the two-minute offense and added a 25-yard Brad Green field goal to close the half.

Jalepes made his way back into the scoring summary to start the third stanza, matching his two-yard touchdown rush in the first quarter, and the Bridgewater lead jumped to 39-10. The Eagles struck again when Trey Stephens took a Scroggins pass 15 yards to the house. Mensah would then score his second rushing touchdown of the evening, this time from three yards out, with just two ticks left in the third quarter to push the advantage to 53-10.

The Panther run game was held quiet the whole afternoon, as Bridgewater held Ferrum to just 46 yards on the ground and 180 yards total. Frank Ross was the leading rusher for the Panthers, collecting 26 yards on 14 carries. Clifford ended up 7-19 through the air for 71 yards and a score. Titus Jones saw time under center as well for the Panthers, finishing 6-12 with an interception. Dazon Harrison led Ferrum in the receiving department, collecting 40 yards on two catches. Bridgewater amased 396 total yards, 269 of those through the air. Scroggins was 20-27 passing for 245 yards and two scores. Jalepes notched 57 yards on the ground the go along with two touchdowns. Mensah also recorded two scores on the ground for the Eagles on the afternoon. Stephens had a big game receiving, amassing 142 yards on 11 catches and a score.

Dustin Swaine led the Panthers with eight tackles on the defensive side of the ball. Sydnor forced a fumble, and Michael Roman recorded a sack for a 12-yard loss. ReShaun Myers led the Eagles with eight tackles on the afternoon, including a sack. PJ Price recorded an interception and 35 return yards. TJ Jennings and Isaiah Farmer added a tackle for loss each for Bridgewater.

Coach Rob Grande's team will be back in action Saturday, October 26 in a home contest, taking on ODAC foe Southern Virginia at W.B. Adams Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m. Ferrum is also hosting the 2019 Blue Ridge Folklife Festival on campus that day.
