Swimmers Compete at Guilford Invitational


GREENSBORO, North Carolina -- Ferrum College opened its 2019-20 men's and women's swim seasons at the Guilford College Invitational, held Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Ferrum's women finished sixth in a field of seven teams, while the men were third of three teams.

The Panthers competed well in a few individual races, posting many top-10 finishes. In the women's event, Katie Shoaf was sixth in the 100 butterfly, eighth in the 100 freestyle and ninth in the 50 freestyle. Hunter Tharpe took time from her work with the women's golf fall schedule and placed sixth in the 100 backstroke and eighth in th 200 IM.

Tharpe and Shoaf swam the first and third legs, respectively, of Ferrum's sixth-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Tharpe also swam the first and Shoaf final legs of the Panthers' seventh-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay.

On the men's side, Taylor Darnell posted third-place finishes in the 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, and 200 IM. Darnell also swam the second leg of Ferrum's third-place 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays, was also fourth in the 100 backstroke.

Jacob Blaukovitch was fourth in the 100 breaststroke, fourth in the 200 IM and swam the opening leg of the third-place 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. Dom Philpot placed fourth in the 50 freestyle, and swam the second leg of the 200 medley relay and the final leg of the 200 freestyle relay.

Bisnett's team will be back in the pool on Saturday, Oct. 12, at the 2019 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Relays. This year's event is being Hosted by Washington and Lee University at the W&L Natatorium in Lexington, Virginia.
