FERRUM, Va. — Ferrum College's women's basketball team will play at home tonight in the USA South Tournament, hosting No. 4 Methodist University at 7:00 p.m. at Swartz Gym.
Ferrum earned the tournamen's top seed after winning a share of the regular season title with No. 2 seed Christopher Newport University and No. 3 Greensboro College. All three teams finished with identical 15-3 USA South regular-season records, causing a three-way tie for the title.
Coach Bryan Harvey's team brings a 21-5 record into the game, having tied the school record already for season wins. The previous best record was in 2008, when Harvey's team finished with a 21-7 record and won the USA South regular-season crown.
The Panthers took the season series against the Monarchs, sweeping Methodist in the two encounters this season. In the first meeting in Fayetteville, N.C., Ferrum withstood a furious second-half rally by MU to claim a 59-54 decision.
The second bout between the rivals occured on the Panthers' Senior Day. Shea Smith had a season-high 20 points to lead Ferrum to a 73-62 victory over the Monarchs.
Entering tonight's game, Tesla Akers, who leads the team in scoring with 13.5 points per game, is 18 points shy of the 1,000-point plateau. Teammate Kristen Keith, who is third on the all-time career scoring list with 1,455 career points, is averaging 12.2 points per outing.
The winner of tonight's game will face the winner of the Greensboro/CNU contest on the campus of the remaining higher seed on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.
