FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College will play Christopher Newport University in the title game of the 2012 USA South Women's Basketball Tournament Feb. 26 at home. At stake is the league's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Panthers are the tournament's top seed, while the Captains are the #2 seed. Both teams bring identical 22-5 records into the game. Ferrum, CNU and Greensboro College shared the regular-season title this year, each closing with a 15-3 mark against USA South opponents. Ferrum earned the top seed by virtue of having a 3-1 record against the other two. CNU earned the #2 seed with a 2-2 mark, and Greensboro was #3 at 1-3.
Ferrum and CNU split their regular season series, each winning at home. The Captains beat Ferrum 66-62 January 8 in Newport News. The Panthers returned the favor with an 82-58 thumping February 5 in Ferrum.
Christopher Newport is led statistically by Tia Perry (12.1 ppg, 7.1 rpg), Nicole Mitchell (11.4 ppg, 6.1 rpg) and Camry Green (8.4 ppg, 7.9 rpg). CNU averages 64.6 points per game, while holding opponents to 50.3 points per game. The Captains shoot just under 41% from the floor and 31% from behind the three-point line.
The Panthers are led by Tesla Akers (13.5 ppg, 3.5 apg), Kristen Keith (12.1 ppg, 7.2 rpg) and Jacole Hairston (10.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg). Ferrum is averaging almost 78 points per game, while opponents average 63 points. The Panthers are shooting 46% from the floor and almost 40% from behind the arc.
