FERRUM, Va. -- Four players reached double-digit scoring to help Ferrum College beat Methodist University 82-66 in USA South Athletic Conference women's basketball action this afternoon at Swartz Gymnasium. Jacole Hairston had a game-high 18 points to help keep the Panthers unbeaten at 11-0.
The Panthers broke a 39-39 halftime deadlock with a 12-0 run to open the second half. Katy Kipps converted three layups and a pair of free throws, Hairston hit a three-pointer and Kylene Culler made one of two free throws. The Monarchs did not score in the second half until Courtney Woods made a jumper from the left side at 14:46 to cut Ferrum's lead to 51-41.
Tesla Akers added 16 points in the win, Kipps had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Kelsey Frazier had 10 points. Shea Smith dished out five assists and made four steals. Culler had six points to go with a game-high nine rebounds, and Boreika Burwell had seven points, two assists and a pair of steals.
T.T. Taylor had 12 points for Methodist (8-4, 3-2 USA South). She was the only Monarch in double digits, as Methodist shot 43% from the floor to Ferrum's 54%. The Panthers won the battle of the board 40-27. Ferrum (11-0, 5-0 USA South) will be back in action Sunday, Jan. 10, at home against Greensboro College. The USA South game tips off at 2:00 p.m. in Swartz Gymnasium.
