FERRUM, Va. -- The Ferrum College women's basketball team has its first-ever national ranking since becoming an NCAA Division III school in 1984-95.  The Panthers received 118 points and hold the #21 spot in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.

The D3hoops.com poll is voted on by a panel of 25 coaches, Sports Information Directors and media members from across the country, and is published weekly.  DePauw University (15-0) is the nation's top-ranked team this week, earning 623 points and 24 of the possible 25 first-place votes.  Calvin holds the #2 spot with 598 points and the other first-place vote.  Ferrum (12-0) is one of only eight unbeaten teams among the NCAA Division III ranks.

Ferrum preserved its unblemished record with a pair of home USA South Athletic Conference wins Jan. 12-13 over Methodist University and Greensboro College.  The Panthers are tied for first place in the USA South with #16 Christopher Newport University.

Ferrum is led by Bryan Harvey, who owns a 144-61 (.702) career coaching record now in his eighth year at the helm of the Panther women’s basketball program.  Harvey's 2011-12 team won the USA South regular season and post-season tournament titles, and advanced to the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time in 17 years.

Harvey's squad has a big week ahead, starting with a Wednesday, Jan. 16, game at USA South newcomer Maryville College in Tennessee.  The Panthers return home Saturday, Jan. 19, for a showdown with league rival Christopher Newport at 2:00 p.m.  Ferrum then hosts North Carolina Wesleyan College Sunday, Jan. 20, at 2:00 p.m. in another USA South matchup.
