FERRUM, Va. -- The Ferrum College women's basketball team, ranked #21 this week by D3hoops.com, beat #16 Christopher Newport University 65-55 in USA South action Jan. 19 in front of a packed house at Swartz Gymnasium. It was Ferrum's second win over a nationally-ranked team this year, including a 97-94 win over then #24 Louisiana College Dec. 28 in Montgomery, Alabama.
Ferrum led by three at halftime 31-28, but widened the lead to as much as 13 points on a Hairston layup at the 4:09 mark to put the Panthers on top 57-44. CNU would get as close as seven points after that, when Nicole Mitchell converted a layup at 3:11 to cut the lead to 57-50.
Hairston, Kylene Culler and Kayla Goins had 12 points each to lead Ferrum to the win. Culler led the Panthers in rebounding with 12. Katy Kipps added 10 points and nine rebounds, and Shea Smith had five points to go with her game-high 10 assists. Hairston and Kipps each had three blocked shots.
Mitchell had 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Captains (13-1, 7-2 USA South), both game-high totals, and added a pair of blocked shots. Camry Green had 14 points and nine rebounds, while Tia Perry had 12 points. Ferrum (13-1, 7-1 USA South) returns to action Sunday, Jan. 20 at home against North Carolina Wesleyan College. The USA South game tips off at 2:00 p.m. in Swartz Gymnasium.
