Ferrum Women Too Much for Squirrels


STAUNTON, Va. -- Tesla Akers had 20 points as the Ferrum College women's basketball team blasted Mary Baldwin College 96-44 in USA South Athletic Conference action Jan. 26 on the road.

The win over Mary Baldwin and Friday night's win at Averett University put Ferrum is sole possession of first place in the league standings at 10-1.  Maryville College is in second at 8-1 in league play, and Christopher Newport University is third at 8-2.

Jacole Hairston added 18 points and Katy Kipps had 16 points for the Panthers. Jessica Rhodes added 17 points and Kylene Culler had 13 points and seven rebounds.  Shanice Miles had 14 points for the Fighting Squirrels, who remain winless at 0-17 overall and 0-10 in the USA South.

Ferrum (16-2, 10-1 USA South) returns to action Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 2-3, with a pair of USA South road games.  Coach Bryan Harvey's team will be at William Peace University Saturday and Meredith College Sunday.  Both games are set for 2:00 p.m. tip-offs in Raleigh, North Carolina.
