FERRUM, Va. -- The Ferrum College women's basketball team beat LaGrange College, 92-74, Feb. 9 at home to retain its hold on first place in the USA South Athletic Conference standings. Shea Smith had a career-high 28 points to lead the Panthers.
Smith was 9-13 from the floor and 1-2 from behind the three-point line. She was a perfect 9-9 from the free-throw line, and added seven assists, four rebounds and a pair of steals. Smith's previous single-game scoring mark was 23 points in a win over Lynchburg College December 18, 2010 in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Katy Kipps added 24 points on 10-10 shooting from the floor, and was 4-5 from the line. Kipps added 10 rebounds, one assist and a blocked shot. Tesla Akers and Kylene Culler each added 11 points in the win. Katie Covington led LaGrange (13-9, 8-7 USA South) with 19 points, and
Ferrum (20-2, 14-1 USA South) returbns to action Sunday, Feb. 10, at home against Piedmont College. The USA South game gets underway at 2:00 p.m. at Swartz Gymnasium.
