FERRUM, Va. -- Visiting Piedmont College cut a 15-point halftime deficit to three points late in the game, but got no closer as the Ferrum College women's basketball team held on for an 85-78 USA South Athletic Conference win this afternoon at Swartz Gymnasium. Prior to the game, a Senior Day ceremony was held in honor of graduating seniors Tesla Akers and Kelsey Frazier.
Ferrum led 46-31 at the break, but Piedmont chipped away at the lead and got to within three at 68-65 on Chandler Alverson's jumper with 4:36 left in regulation. Shea Smith hit a jumper to push the lead back to five, then Jacole Hairston made one of two free throws, Boreika Burwell made two free throws, and Hairston hit a jumper to give the Panthers a 76-66 lead with 3:11 left. Lauren Hamel drained a three-pointer at the buzzer for the final score.
Hairston had 19 points, Smith had 17 points and Tesla Akers 16 points for Ferrum. Smith added six assists, five rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot. Kylene Culler closed with a double-double of 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Panthers. Hamel led all scorers with 23 points for the Lions (9-13, 5-11 USA South).
Ferrum (21-2, 15-1 USA South) plays next at Methodist University Saturday, Feb. 16, at 2:00 p.m. in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Coach Bryan Harvey's team closes regular season play at Greensboro College Sunday, Feb. 17, at 2:00 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina.
