FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Christopher Newport University led 12-2 early on and never looked back in beating Ferrum College 70-55 in the USA South Tournament championship game, played this afternoon at Crown Center Arena. Jacole Hairston and Kylene Culler were named to the USA South All-Tournament Team.
Hairston led the Panthers with 21 points, while Tesla Akers had 11 points. Culler had a game-high 12 rebounds to go with four points. The Captains (26-2) got 16 points from Tia Perry, 15 points from Camry Green and 14 points from Nicole Motchell in earning the post-season tournament title and the USA South's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III playoffs.

CNU shot 45% from the floor to Ferrum's 38%, and went to the free throw line 30 times (20-30). Ferrum went to the line just 10 times (8-10). The Panthers won the battle of the boards 36-34 but committed 18 turnovers, while CNU had 11.
The Panthers (24-4) must wait until Monday afternoon to see if they earn an at-large bid into the playoffs. Ferrum won last year's USA South Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time in 17 seasons. Coach bryan Harvey's team lost its opening-round game to Washington University in St. Louis at a regional played at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky.
