ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Zarkia Mattox had 22 points, nine rebounds, six assists and six steals as Ferrum College posted a 63-51 win in its USA South women's basketball opener this afternoon at Everett Gym.
Ferrum (6-6, 1-0 USA South), N.C. Wesleyan (5-7, 0-1 USA South)
The Bishops jumped out to a 10-0 lead less than four minutes into the game, but Ferrum responded with a 14-9 run to close to gap to 19-14 at the end of the first period. The Panthers used a 21-8 run in the second period to grab a 35-27 halftime lead, then opened the third period with an 11-0 burst to extend the lead to 46-27.
Ferrum: Mattox 22 pts, 9 reb, 6 asst, 6 steals; Brooke Lewis 15 pts
N.C. Wesleyan: KeChae Parker 12 pts, 10 reb
Ferrum was scheduled to play at Methodist University Sunday, Jan. 8, but snow forecast in North Carolina this weekend caused the Methodist campus to close and the game to be postponed. No make up date has been determined. The Panthers will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 14, at home against William Peace University. The USA South game gets underway at 2 p.m. in Swartz Gym.
