USA South Release
FERRUM, Va. -- Once again, the USA South has named Ferrum College's Zarkia Mattox Women's Basketball Player of the Week. The junior guard was honored for the sixth time this season for her play in three games last week, all USA South wins. Mattox also earned Player of the Week honors Nov. 28, Dec. 12, Jan. 9, Jan. 23 and Jan. 30.
Mattox averaged 22.3 points and 14 rebounds per game over three games last week. In a 62-35 victory over Mary Baldwin University Feb. 2 on the road, Mattox had 13 points and 10 rebounds. In Ferrum's 69-52 win over North Carolina Wesleyan College Feb. 4 at home, she had a game-high 36 points, 17 rebounds, five assists and five steals. It was the fifth time Mattox had scored 30 or more points this season, and her second-highest single game total. Mattox closed out the week with 18 points, 15 rebounds, and seven assists in Ferrum's 63-46 win over Methodist University Feb. 5 at home.
Also nominated this week were Marla Crawford of Greensboro College, Allyson Freiermuth of Maryville College, Garis Grant of Agnes Scott College, Juliette Harp of Huntingdon College, Lauren Johnson of LaGrange College, Frida Lundquist Averett University and Joanna Smith of Covenant College.
Ferrum is 14-7 overall and 10-1 in USA South play. The Panthers play next on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Methodist. The USA South contest is scheduled to get underway at 5:30 p.m. in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
