FERRUM, Va. -- Acting Director of Athletics Gary Holden has announced the hiring of Mikayla Cannaday as assistant women's soccer coach at Ferrum College.
Cannaday earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Ferrum in May 2019, majoring in Health Science with minors in Biology and Coaching. She played soccer for the Panthers from 2015-18, earning All-Conference East Division First Team honors in 2016 from the USA South Athletic Conference.
A stellar student-athlete, Cannaday was just as successful in the classroom as on the field. She was a USA South Academic All-Conference selection in 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18, and enjoyed the same honor from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in 2018-19.
Cannaday was also a USA South All-Sportsmanship Team member in 2016 and 2017. She earned Dean List all eight semesters she was a student at Ferrum, and was a member of Ferrum's Biology Honor Society. She will work with first-year Head Coach Erin Saleeby, who was an assistant coach during all four seasons of Cannaday's collegiate playing career.
"Playing on the Ferrum women's soccer team for the past four years has not only made me a better soccer player, but it made me a better person" said Cannaday. "After graduation, I was sad that I had to leave that part of my life behind. However, God has a plan and I could not be more thankful that Coach Saleeby asked me to join her staff. I'm ecstatic to be coaching this group of women because they are standard setters. Not only are they great players, but they are amazing people as well. Even though I will never wear that Ferrum jersey again, I'm so blessed to still be apart of this program."
Prior to her graduation last May, Cannaday assisted Saleeby with the Panthers' spring non-traditional season, assisting with drills, practice plans and goalkeeper training. She has served as a personal trainer at the Carilion Wellness Westlake during the spring of 2019, as well as a Fitness Center Instructor at the Ferrum YMCA from 2015-18. Cannaday began work at Ferrum on August 1.
