2015 Virginia DualsW&L Invitational ResultsHAMPTON, Va. -- Ferrum College competed in the 2015 Virginia Duals held Friday and Saturday, Jan. 9-10, at the Hampton Coliseum. The Panthers posted a 2-2 record and finished fifth in the eight-team American College Division. It was the second straight Virginia Duals appearance for the young Panther wrestling program, now in its second year of existence.
Ferrum opened Friday with a quarterfinal loss to Anderson (SC) by a score of 25-18, then bounced back later in the day with a resounding 39-12 win over the Apprentice School. On Saturday, the Panthers fell 22-12 to Nassau Community College (NY), the 2013 NJCAA national champion. In the fifth-place match, Ferrum avenged the earlier loss to Anderson with a 27-20 win over the Trojans.
Freshman
Nick Rodriguez was named the American College Division Outstanding Wrestler. A freshman from Clayton, New Jersey, Rodriguez posted four straight wins in the 197-lb weight class. He opened with a pin over Anderson's Fletcher Smith in a time of 3:30, pinned Apprentice's Josh Rodriguez in 1:13, blanked Nassau's Darien Riley 5-0, and posted an 8-3 decision over Anderson's Michael Gallagher.
Tate Dulany (285) also went 4-0 with two pins, a win and forfeit.
Corbin Ramos went 2-2 with a pair of pins, while Brett Sommers (125),
Logan Meister (141),
Logan Smith (149) and
Dustin Santmyers (165) each finished 2-2.
Coach Nate Yetzer also had a group of 10 wrestlers entered in the 2015 Washington and Lee Invitational, including two that advanced to the finals;
Josh Alston (165) and
Alveno Matthews (285). Alston went 2-1 en route to the finals, while Matthews went 3-1 with a pin.
Adam Bresson (197) went 3-1 in posting a third-place finish.
Paul Ambrose (141) and
Max Baker (165) both finished fourth,
Warren Cain (157) and
Corey Klapps (174) finished fifth, and Pat Wenzlaff was sixth. The Panthers finished fifth of 10 teams entered in the tournament.
Ferrum (6-7) returns to action Friday, Jan. 16, at home against Southern Virginia. It will be the Panthers' first action at home this season.
