Tigers Top Ferrum in Football

FERRUM, Virginia -- Tanner Bernard threw for 440 yards and four touchdowns to lead Hampden-Sydney College past Ferrum College 35-16 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football action this afternoon at W.B. Adams Stadium.

THE BASICS
The Tigers struck first when Bernard completed a 72-yard scoring strike to Jamahdia Whitby just 39 seconds into the game. Bernard then connected with Mason Cunningham for an 18-yard touchdown three and a half minutes lated and the score was 14-0 at 10:54 of the first quarter.

Bernard and Cunningham connected for another score 12:-08 of the second quarter, this time for a 36-yard touchdown, but the PAT attempt was blocked and scooped up by Avion Smith, who raced to the other end for the rare two-point defensive PAT score to make it a 20-2 game.

Zac Smiley rumbled in from a yard out at 7:11 of the second quarter to trim the score to 20-9, only to see Melik Frost score from six yards out and a Bernard to David Byler passing PAT widen the lead to 29-9 at the break. 

Bernard and Cunningham connected again at 6:31 of the third quarter with a 42-yard scoring pass to increase the lead to 35-9, . Ferrum would score one last time when Monzelle Campbell returned a punt 87 yards for a touchdown with 3:08 left in the game.
