PEMBROKE, N.C. -- Ferrum College's men's basketball team competed in day one action at the UNC Pembroke Thanksgiving Tournament, falling 77-71 to Shaw University in non-conference play tonight at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

THE BASICS
Shaw jumped out to a 5-0 lead and eventually expanded the lead to 9-3. Ferrum settled in and used a 12-3 run to take a 15-12 lead at 11:54 of the first half. The Bears came back to take a 23-21 lead, but
Rodrigo Farias' jumper at 7:28 tied the game at 23-23.Â

A three-pointer and step back jumper put Ferrum out in front 35-28 with two and a half minutes left in the first half. Jones would add a pair of free throws to close out the half and Ferrum took a 36-33 lead into the break.

Abdulh Diaby's dunk one minute into the second half gave Ferrum a 40-35 lead, but Shaw responded with a 16-5 run to take a 51-45 lead at the 11:26 mark. Avery Huggins made a layup and free throw at 5:11 to put the Bears out in front by eight points, 68-60.

Ferrum rattled off the next seven points, including three free throws and a three-pointer by Jones to trim the lead to 68-67 with 4:25 left in the second half. Jones was fouled and converted a pair of free throws with 31 seconds left in regulation to get the lead down to 72-69, but the Bears hit free throws down the stretch to seal the win and remain undefeated this season.
