Ferrum Women Drop Heartbreaker to SWU at Home

FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College's women's basketball team dropped a Conference Carolinas game at home to Southern Wesleyan University, falling 58-56 this afternoon at Swartz Gym.

THE BASICS
Maslyn Mosbacher's three-pointer at 4:50 of the opening quarter put Ferrum on top 8-5, but Southern Wesleyan's Lexie Ransom returned the favor 40 seconds later to tie the game at 8-8. The two teams played evenly for the remainder of the first, with the Panthers holding a 14-12 lead after one.

The Warriors opened the second quarter on fire, outscoring Ferrum 11-0 to take a 23-14 lead midway through the quarter. Ferrum battled back, cutting the lead to 25-20 on Jordan Fisher's driving layup at the 3:28 mark, then Zy'Breayziah Alexander's layup at 2:57 made it a 25-22 game.

SWU scored the final six points of the quarter to take a 31-22 halftime lead. Savannah Nicholson had 13 of Southern Wesleyan's first-half points, while Alexander led the Panthers with five points at the break. 

Layups by Dezariyah Clark, Alexander and Riddick to open the fourth quarter put Ferrum on top 44-41. Late in the quarter, Mosbacher made two free throws and Kimmons sank a pair to put Frerum in front 56-53 with 39 seconds left in regulation. Kyra Price drilled a three-pointer from the right side for Southern Wesleyan to tie the game at 56-56. Price then made two free throws in the winning seconds of the game for the final count.

Coach Bryan Harvey's team will be back in action Monday, January 19, at Francis Marion University in Florence, South Carolina. The Conference Carolinas doubleheader is set to begin with the women's game at 2:00 p.m. and will be followed by a 4:00 p.m. men's tip-off.
