FERRUM, Va. -- Hunter Thompson, Joseph Toner and Braeden Fluke all scored late pins for Ferrum College, but the Panthers came up short again Newberry College in Conference Carolinas wrestling action, falling 31-22 January 6 at Swartz Gym.

THE BASICS
Newberry jumped out to a quick 20-0 lead, courtesy of a pin, a forfeit, a tech fall, and a decision in the first four weight classes. Andres Cortes (157 lbs) stopped that run with a 15-3 major decision over Dennis Virelli to cut the lead to 20-4, but the Wolves countered with another tech fall to extend the lead to 25-4.

Ferrum rallied with wins in three of the last four weight classes. Hunter Thompson (174) pinned Donovan Hawthorne in 3:20, then Joseph Toner (184) matched that with a first-period fall over Dreshaun Brown in 1:59. Newberry scored a pin at 197, then Breaden Fluke decked Chance Jackson at the 4:47 mark.
