Scott McConnell joined the Ferrum Athletics staff as Assistant Football Coach in June 2020. He was named Special Teams Coordinator in May 2021, then Co-Defensive Coordinator in April 2022.

McConnell previously served a year as Assistant Football Coach at Averett University, where he worked as defensive backs coach and Recruiting Coordinator.

Prior to that, he spent a year at Hampton University, where he coached tight ends, and three years as Defensive Coordinator and Director of Football Operations at the Apprentice School.

McConnell also spent two years as Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator at Jireh Preparatory Academy, four years as Assistant Coach at Hargrave Military Academy, and a year each as Assistant Coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College and Southern Virginia University.

McConnell earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2007 from Emory & Henry College, where he played football for the Wasps and earned a spot on the Academic All-ODAC team his senior year. McConnell and his wife Jessica reside in Ferrum.
