Prior to coming to Ferrum, Long spent time with many different developmental camps with the likes of Danny Manning at Wake Forest University, and John Calipari at the University of Kentucky, and The Charlotte Hornets. In those camps, Long created numerous drills for the youth of all ages across all facets of the game.

Long is a graduate of fellow Old Dominion Athletic Conference member Guilford College, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Sports Management in 2019.

A native of Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, Long found much success in his playing days at Guilford College. A two-time National Tournament participant, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2019, Long has a resume that includes two ODAC championships (2017, 2019), three All-ODAC selections (17-19), ODAC All-Tournament team (2019), ODAC All-Academic team (2018-19), ODAC Tournament Most Valuable Player (2017), North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association All-State (2017) and National Association of Basketball Coaches and d3hoops.com All-Region (2017). After his collegiate career, Long went on to play professionally in Ireland for one season.
