Ferrum Stops Methodist 31-13 in Football

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Matt Lucas rushed for 132 yards, and Mike Vann and Le'Bryan Patterson had a pair of touchdowns each as Ferrum College picked up a 31-13 USA South Athletic Conference football win over Methodist University this afternoon on the road.

The win was Ferrum's sixth in a row, and keeps the Panthers unbeaten in USA South play at 4-0.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Vann put Ferrum on the board with a 2-yard touchdown run at 13:25 of the second quarter. Methodist's Michael Doyne blocked the extra point and Ferrum led 6-0.

Methodist struck right back. On the first play from scrimmage after the kickoff, Erik Teague connected with Chris Peoples for a 60-yard scoring pass. The extra point put Methodist up 7-6 with 13:25 remaining in the second.

On its next drive, Ferrum would score on Roy Banks' 6-yard run to cap a 10-play, 64-yard drive with 8:54 left in the half. The two-point conversion failed and Ferrum took a 12-7 lead into the locker room.

Methodist retook the lead at 10:44 of the third quarter on Teague's 11-yard TD pass to Nathan Kindley. The two-point conversion failed and the Monarchs held a 13-12 lead. Ferrum's defense put the clamps down and held Methodist scoreless the rest of the way.

Ferrum started the next drive from its own 16 yard line and drove 84 yards in seven plays. Lucas' 38-yard run to the Methodist eight yard line set Ferrum up with 1st-and goal at the Methodist eight yard line. Vann plunged in from there and Clint Slappey's PAT was good to put Ferrum up 19-13 with 7:53 remaining in the third quarter.

On Methodist's next drive, Teague was picked off by Ferrum DB Darwin Nichols at the Ferrum 44 yard line. Ferrum would score 11 plays later, capped by Mayo's 20-yard TD pass to Patterson. Devoe Mewborn blocked the extra point attempt and Ferrum led 25-13 at the 13:21 mark of the fourth quarter.

On Methodist's next drive DL Willie Taylor recorded his first career interception, picking off an errant Teague pass and returning it to the Methodist 28 yard line. Ferrum could not capitalize and turned the ball over on downs four plays later.

Ferrum's defense rose to the occasion again, forcing the Monarchs to punt after going three-and-out. A 21-yard punt set Ferrum up on Methodist's 45 yard line. Nine plays later (including eight rushes), Patterson slammed in from four yards out to give Ferrum its final score at 31-13 with 3:22 left in the game. Michael Sabol's extra point attempt was blocked, Methodist's third of the day.

Ferrum had 400 yards in total offense, 369 rushing. Methodist had 322 yards in total offense, 269 passing. Backup QB Matt Dobson had 81 yards rushing on 13 carries, and Vann had 56 yards and two scores on 13 carries. Dobson completed one of five passes for 20 yards and a score. Starting QB Marcus Mayo had 56 rushing yards on nine carries and was 1-3 passing for 11 yards.

Teague was 20-29 passing for 269 yards and two TDs for the Monarchs. He was picked off three times and sacked four times. Methodist (1-5, 0-3 USA South) had just 53 yards rushing, 20 by Reggie Scales.

Ferrum (6-1, 4-0 USA South) is idle next week and will return to action Saturday, Nov. 1, at USA South opponent Greensboro College. The lone night game on Ferrum's schedule is set to kick off at 7 p.m. at Jamieson Stadium.
