BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Ferrum College women's basketball team picked up a 78-59 non-conference victory tonight at Bridgewater College.
Miranda Carrasco's jumper at the 13:21 put Ferrum up 20-8 and the Panthers never looked back.
Brittni Taylor's 3-point jumper gave Ferrum's its largest lead of the game, 36-19 witt 2:38 left in the first half.
The Eagles cut the lead to single digits on Rebecca Saunders' 3-point jumper with 9:45 left to trim Ferrum's lead to 59-50.
The Panthers built the lead back to 15 points following a Carrasco jumper, an
Ashley Norton trey and a
Kristen Keith jumper to take a 66-51 lead with 7:04 left to play.
Ferrum's
Tonya Wright scored 24 points on 8-12 shooting from the floor to lead all scorers, and hauled down 10 rebounds. Wright, the 2007 USA South Rookie of the Year, was 3-4 behind the arc and 5-7 from the line.
Brittney Bullock, playing in her first game of the season, had 11 points on 4-9 shooting in just 17 minutes.
Caprice Laws scored 10 points and dished out five assists. Carrasco added nine points in the win. Ferrum led 38-26 at the half.
Bridgewater (0-2) was led by Rebecca Henderson's 13 points and seven rebounds. Saunders had 12 points and Emileigh Lambert had 10 points. The Eagles won the battle of the boards with a 40-37 rebounding edge.
Ferrum (1-1) returns to action this weekend at the 2008 Marymount Marine Corps Tip-Off, held Friday through Sunday, Nov. 21-23, at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. Coach
Bryan Harvey's team faces Neumann College Friday at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday games will be determined by the tournament schedule below.
