FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College's volleyball team defeated Eastern Mennonite University 3-1 tonight at home in non-conference action. Set scores were 25-10, 17-25, 25-19, 25-22.
The match was played during
DIG PINK Night at Swartz Gym. DIG PINK is a Breast Cancer awareness rally sponsored by the Side-Out Foundation.
During the month of October, an estimated 750 colleges and high schools will host DIG PINK events throughout the country. This was Ferrum's second consecutive year hosting an event.
Rachel Shumaker and
Jessica Flanagan had 14 kills each to propel Ferrum to the win. Shumaker also had 20 digs, while Flanagan had 16 digs and three service aces.
Kayla Trippeer added 12 kills and 10 digs to the winning effort.
Hannah Shumaker had 27 assists, nine digs and seven kills.
Jenni Carter had 14 assists.
Tabitha Bowman had 10 kills and 13 digs for Eastern Mennonite (9-9). Christine Bottles led the Royals with 28 assists. Laura Stoltzfus had 10 digs and nine kills, while Elisa Troyer had 10 digs.
Ferrum (10-10) returns to action Saturday, Oct. 3, when it competes in a USA South Athletic Conference quad at Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The panthers face Greensboro College at 4 p.m., then take on host Methodist at 6 p.m. Ferrum looks to avenge losses to both schools earlier this season.
