FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College jumped out to a 35-7 lead and never looked back en route to a 49-35 USA South football win over Methodist University this afternoon at W.B. Adams Stadium. The win came during the College's Homecoming Weekend '09.
Steven Harris put Ferrum on the board at 5:54 of the first quarter when he sprinted 52 yards for a score.
Quintel Banks went 10 yards for a score at 1:05 of the first to spot Ferrum a 14-0 lead after one quarter.
Methodist's Corey McGuire trimmed the lead to 14-7 on a three-yard run at 11:34 of the second. Harris and
Mike Vann then scored touchdowns at 6:11 and 5:42 of the second quarter, respectively. Harris's score was on a 7-yard run, while Vann's was on a 41-yard reception from
Matt Dobson, giving Ferrum a 28-7 halftime lead.
Dobson opened the third with a 6-yard TD run at 9:07 for Ferrum's largest lead of the game at 35-7. The Monarchs scored next on Brian Hopkins' 91-yard TD reception from backup QB Alan Preston at 13:56 of the fourth.
Vann scored again, this time on a zig-zag run that took him across the field for a 51-yard score at the 12:55 mark. Jason Talbert and McGuire caught TD passes from Preston at 9:40 and 7:03, respectively. The drive on McGuire's second TD of the game came following an 8-play, 60-yard drive that began after Methodist successfully recovered an onside kick.
Tyler Brubaker recovered the next Methodist onside kick attempt at the MU 37 yard line and Ferrum scored four plays later when Harris slammed in from two yards out. McGuire scored his third TD of the day with 1:03 left to play on an 8-yard pass from Preston. Methodist's last onside kick attempt was recovered for the Panthers by
Roger Smith.
Ferrum totaled 544 offensive yards, 404 rushing and 140 passing. Methodist had 407 in total offense, 344 passing and 63 rushing.
Harris had 115 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries for the Panthers, averaging 12.8 yards per carry. Vann had 91 yards and a score on 10 carries. Dobson was 7-11 passing with a TD and one interception.
Preston was 22-35 passing for 318 yards and four TDs with one interception for the Monarchs. McGuire had two TDs on three receptions for 52 yards, and added six rushes for six yards and a score.
Scott Puschell was 7-7 in PAT attempts for the Panthers, while Tyler Mosko was 5-5 for Methodist (1-4, 0-2 USA South).
Brandon Jackson was in on eight tackles for Ferrum, seven solo and one assisted.
Maureik Goode was also in on eight tackles for FC, five solo and three assisted. Michael Doyne was in on 12 for the Monarchs, five solo and seven assisted.
Ferrum (3-2, 1-1 USA South) returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 17, at home against Greensboro College. Kickoff for the USA South matchup is set for 1 p.m. in Ferrum.
