NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Ferrum College, the #2 seed, advanced to the title game of the 2010 USA South Women's Basketball Tournament with a 74-65 semifinal win over #3 Averett University this afternoon at Christopher Newport University.
Averett led 31-29 at halftime, but Ferrum outscored the Cougars 45-34 after intermission to claim the win. Ferrum lost twice to Averett in this year's home and away series.
The Panthers got 21 points from
Tonya Wright, who went 11-13 from the free throw line.
Ashley Norton had 17 points, including four three-point baskets.
Brittney Bullock had 15 points, while
Kristen Keith had four points to go with her game-high 13 rebounds.
Tesla Akers added eight points.
Averett (17-9) was led by Ashley Washington's 23 points and eight rebounds, both team-high totals. Mette Scheiman added 11 points in the loss.
Ferrum (21-6) will face host Christopher Newport Saturday at 2 p.m. for the championship. CNU thumped #4 Methodist University 78-56 in today's second semifinal. The winner claims the league's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Div. III Tournament.
