FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College won the first game 4-0, then eked out a 3-2 win in the eighth inning of the nightcap to sweep a USA South softball doubleheader over Meredith College this afternoon at Franklin Community Bank Field.
In the second game,
Kashina Hancock was placed on second base in the eighth inning using the international tiebreak rule. Two batters later,
Hannah Shumaker drilled a pitch up the middle, allowing Hancock to round third base and score the winning run.
Allyson Stevens earned the win in game two, pitching the eight inning for Ferrum in relief of starter
Rachel Shumaker. Shumaker scattered six hits over seven innings, allowed two earned runs, walked two and struck out three. Stevens allowed hits, runs or walks, while striking out one.
In the first game,
Kaitlyn Culler threw a complete seven-inning three-hitter, walking striking out one. Culler also went 2-3 at the plate with a run and a stolen base.
Megan Barger went 2-3 with a double, a run and an RBI for Ferrum (14-8, 4-0 USA South).
Hannah Shumaker went 2-3 with an RBI and a stolen base.
Meredith (10-8, 0-2 USA South) got its two runs in the second game courtesy of Guss Crist's two-run blast over the center field wall in the fourth inning.
