BURLINGTON, N.C. -- Brittany Parsons singled through the left side to score Rebecca Pink in the bottom of the eighth inning and give #2 seed Greensboro College a 1-0 win over #4 Ferum College in the championship game of the 2010 USA South Softball Tournament.
Ferrum reached the title game with a 2-1 win over #1 Christopher Newport earlier in the day. The Captains are currently ranked #5 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association national poll.
Against Christopher Newport, outfielder
Meagan Farrell singled in the bottom of the fourth inning to score
Kaitlyn Culler.
Shelbie Hall then had a sacrifice fly to allow
Rachel Shumaker to score the eventual game-winning run and put Ferrum in front 2-0.
The Captains (36-8) scored a run in the top of the fifth, but the Panther defense held for the win. Culler pitched a complete game for her fifth win of the tournament, improving to 16-5 this year. She scattered eight hits over seven innings with one earned run and three strikeouts.
In the title game against Greensboro, Culler pitched seven scoreless innings before being relieved by
Allyson Stevens in the eighth inning. Culler allowed six hits and struck out five. Stevens absorbed the loss, pitching a third of an inning with three hits and an earned run. Farrell, Culler and catcher
Nicole Hendrick were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
Greensboro (26-15-1) claims the USA South's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament. Ferrum (31-16) must now wait to see if it will earn an at-large bid. The NCAA will announce the 60-team field Sunday, May 9.
