ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Ferrum College swept North Carolina Wesleyan College in a USA Sough softball doubleheader this afternoon on the road, taking the opener 2-1 in eight innings and the nightcap 7-6.
Whitney Womack's single through the left side in the top of the eighth inning pushed two runs across for the Panthers.
Kaitlyn Culler pitched a complete game to earn the win, allowing four hits and an earned run, while striking out 10 batters and walking just one. Culler improves to 11-3 this year with a 2.08 ERA and 60 strikeouts.
In the second game,
Allyson Stevens doubled in the top of the seventh to drive in the game-winning run.
Megan Barger solo homered in the fourth inning for Ferrum (25-11, 13-3 USA South).
Brittany Nichols had three base hits in game two for N.C. Wesleyan (11-16, 4-12 USA South), including a pair of doubles. Ferrum's road trip continues Saturday, April 10, when Coach Van Kleeck's team plays at Christopher Newport University. The USA South doubleheader gets underway at 2 p.m. in Newport News, Virginia.
