Marcus Mayo threw for two touchdowns and rushed for two as Ferrum College routed Greensboro College 66-23 this afternoon at W.B. Adams Stadium to remain unbeaten in USA South football action.
The Panthers opened a 14-0 lead on a six-yard run by Dontaviuos Gilbert and a 10-yard blocked punt return by
Jatavious Adams in the first quarter. Joe Langmayer cut the lead to 14-9 with field goals of 26, 36 and 32 yards in the first and second quarters.
Dominque Lesine scored the first of two touchdowns on the day for the Panthers, a five-yard run, to widen the lead to 21-9 with just over four minutes remaining in the second quarter. The Pride struck back on Tripp Honeycutt's 11-yard TD catch and trimmed the lead to 21-15 with 2:52 left in the second, before
Derrick West hauled in a 30-yard scoring strike from Mayo with 1:25 left in the half.
Mayo opened the third quarter with a five-yard TD run, followed by
Scott Puschell's 23-yard field goal and Lesine's 36-yard TD catch. Puschell was a perfect 9-9 in PATs this afternoon. Greensboro (0-7, 0-4 USA South) scored one more time on a 44-yard Warren Scott run with 45 seconds left in the third.
Mayo, Tim reynolds and
Corey Smith closed out scoring for Ferrum with fourth-quarter touchdown runs of four, two and nine yards, respectively.
Steven Harris and Gilbert had 78 rushing yards each as Ferrum (5-2, 4-0 USA South) rolled up 601 yards in total offense to Greensboro's 221 yards.
Mayo was 10-17 passing for 203 yards with two TDs, an interception and no sacks. Ryan Throndset was 15-33 for 132 yards with a TD, two interceptions and two sacks for Greensboro. Ferrum's
Tremaine Whitney and Greensboro's Dexter Russell had seven tackles each.
Ferrum has won five in a row since opening the season 0-2. The Panthers next face Shenandoah University Saturday, Oct. 29, on the road. The USA South contest kicks off at 7 p.m. at Shentel Stadium in Winchester, Virginia.
