ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Ferrum College's football teams made it three in a row this afternoon with a 21-10 USA South Athletic Conference win over North Carolina Wesleyan College on the road. The Bishops were the USA South's #2 team in this year's preseason coaches poll, while the Panthers were picked to finish third.
N.C. Wesleyan scored on its first possession of the day when Jacques Allston's ran in from seven yards out.
Marcus Mayo evened things with a 78-yard second-quarter punt return for a touchdown and two teams went into halftime deadlocked at 7-7.
Kevin Quicker added a 46-yard field goal to put N.C. Wesleyan on top 10-7 late in the third quarter. Ferrum answered right back with
Dontavious Gilbert's 11-yard TD run to close the quarter, then Mayo found
Makya Jackson from 21 yards out for an early fourth-quarter score and a 21-10 lead. The Panther defense did the rest as Ferrum held on for its second league win in as many games.
Gilbert finished with 104 yards rushing and a score on 11 carries for Ferrum (3-2, 2-0 USA South). Mayo was 4-11 passing for 85 yards and a TD.
Chris Freycinet had 12 tackles for Ferrum, while
Tae Motley had 10. John Jackson was 13-21 passing for 117 yards for the Battling Bishops (1-4, 1-1 USA South). Tazmon Foster led N.C. Wesleyan's defensive effort with 17 tackles, including 11 unassisted.
