EMORY, Va. -- The Ferrum College football team opened its season with a non-conference loss to in-state rival Emory & Henry College, falling to the Wasps 41-12 on the road.
Emory & Henry recovered a Ferrum fumble early in the first quarter at the Ferrum 30 yard line and cashed in two plays later on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Boden to Adam Pugh. Wasp QB Dustin Beck then hit DaVon Ross with a 33-yard scoring strike to open the second quarter and extend E&H's lead to 14-0.
Scott Puschell put Ferrum on the board with a 24-yard field goal halfway through the second quarter, which was answered by the Wasps' Matt Turchin, who drilled a 24-yarder to keep Emory & Henry up 17-3. Ferrum scored it's only touchdown of the day when
Marcus Mayo connected with
Dominique Lesine out of the backfield for a 54-yard pass, trimming the lead to 17-10. Turchin added a 30-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining in the second for a 20-10 halftime lead.
Emory & Henry controlled the game from there, extending its lead to 41-10 before the Panther defense recorded a safety for the final score.
Mayo threw for 183 yards on 16-of-26 passing with a TD and one interception. Mayo led Ferrum with 73 yards rushing on 19 carries. Pugh scored three touchdowns for the Wasps, including the game's opening score on the pass from Boden, and a pair of rushing TDs.
Delano Hall led Ferrum's defense with eight tackles, including one for loss. Shane Wicks had 11 tackles for Emory & Henry, while Michael Young had nine tackles and an interception.
