FERRUM, Va. -- Jonathan Sykes had a school record five field goals to lift Maryville College to a 22-17 USA South Athletic Conference football win over Ferrum College this afternoon at W.B. Adams Stadium. Prior to the game, 14 Ferrum players were recognized with a Senior Day ceremony.
Sykes opened the game with a 25-yarder at 10:13 of the first quarter to give the Scots a 3-0 lead. On Ferrum's ensuing drive,
Tim Reynolds scored on a 68-yard scamper to Ferrum on top 7-3. Maryville struck back when Eric Sisson connected with Jared Miller from nine yards out and the Scots went back out in front 10-7.
Scott Puschell knotted the game at 10-10 with a 29-yard field goal to close of the first quarter.
Sykes hit a 28-yard field goal to put Maryville ahead 13-10 with two seconds left before halftime. Following a scoreless third quarter, Sykes connected on field goals of 46, 34 and 35 yards widen the lead to 22-10 with 3:24 left in the game. Ferrum was able to drive 50 yards and score in less that two minutes, scoring on
Derrick West's four-yard TD pass from Reynolds with 1:42 left to play. The Panthers attempted an onside kick, which was recovered at midfield by Maryville, and the Scots ran the clock out from there.
Travis Felder had 211 yards rushing for the Scots (6-4, 5-2 USA South), while Sisson was 15-31 passing for 175 yards and a touchdown. Dylan Wolfenbarger had 13 tackles to lead the defense.
Reynolds had 112 yards rushing and a touchdown, and was 14-24 passing for 145 yards and another score.
Marcco McNeal led Ferrum (7-3, 5-2 USA South) with 12 tackles.
Lynwood Pickett had nine tackles, inclusing a pair of sacks, and
Raymond Hines had an interception to go with five tackles.
