SALEM, Va. -- Ferrum College's women's basketball team opened the 2013-14 season in style, posting a 103-86 non-conference victory tonight over Roanoke College on the road.
Shea Smith led all scorers with 26 points, and was one of four Panthers in double-figure scoring.
Smith was 7-12 from the floor and a perfect 11-11 from the free throw line.
Kylene Culler had 17 points and eight rebounds,
Kayla Goins had 12 points, and
Jacole Hairston and
Boreika Burwell had 10 points each in the win.
Katy Kipps chipped in nine points.
The Panthers led 47-41 at halftime, with
Lindsay Martin drilling a three-pointer at the buzzer to close the first half. Ferrum's largest lead was 18 points twice, first on a pair of Smith free throws that made it 93-75 with 2:20 left to play and again when
Kemani Crawford converted a layup to make 97-79 with 1:27 left.
Kelsey Smih led the Maroons (2-1) with 17 points, while Paxton Gwin had 16, Bridget Holleran had 12 and Laurel Hankins had 11. Ferrum shot 58% from the floor to Roanoke's 45%, and won the battle of the boards, 45-27.
Ferrum (1-0) returns to action Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7-8, with a pair of non-conference games at home. Coach
Bryan Harvey's team faces Eastern Mennonite University Dec. 7 at 2:00 p.m., then hosts Newport News Apprentice Dec. 8 at 3:00 p.m.
