NEWPORT NEWSVa. -- Christopher Newport University completed a three-game USA South Athletic Conference baseball series sweep over Ferrum College with a 2-1 win this afternoon at Captains Park. CNU took two games from Ferrum Saturday, winning 3-0 and 8-7. Ferrum led 1-0 after six innings today, only to see the Captains score two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning off Justin Weaver's double down the left field line. It was the second consecutive game in which CNU posted a come-from-behind win, including yesterday's nightcap. In that game, the Captains scored eight runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to post the 8-7 win.
Matt Reynolds went 2-3 for the Panthers today, while starting pitcher
Jake Perkins had six strikeouts. Perkins absorbed the loss after allowing four hits and a pair of earned runs over six and a third innings. Weaver went 3-3 with two doubles and a pair of RBI for Christopher Newport (4-0, 3-0 USA South). Starter Bryan Beirlein struck out 10 of the 25 Ferrum batters he faced to earn the win for the Captains.
