FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College suffered its first women's basketball loss of the season, falling 69-66 in overtime to USA South Athletic Conference opponent LaGrange College this afternoon at Swartz Gymnasium.
Ferrum led 56-53 when Alex Wilson drained a three-pointer for LaGrange with 11 seconds left in regulation to tie the game 56-56.
Shea Smith missed a shot at the buzzer and the game went into overtime.
The Panthers led 66-65 with 1:11 left in the overtime period, only to see LaGrange take the lead back on Mayana LeGrande's jumper with 46 seconds left. Ferrum turned the ball over on its next possession and Wilson closed it out with a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to play.
Madison Barker had 15 points for LaGrange (9-6, 3-3 USA South), and Wilson had 14 points. Wilson was 4-6 from behind the three-point line.
Katy Kipps had 18 points, 11 rebounds and a pair of blocked shots for Ferrum.
Jacole Hairston added 15 points, and
Kayla Goins had seven points to go with 11 rebounds and three assists.
Both teams shot 36% from the floor, and LaGrange shot a blistering 53% from behind the arc. Ferrum won the battle of the boards 48-39. Ferrum (10-1, 4-1 USA South) returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 22, at home against Greensboro College. The USA South game gets underway at 7:00 p.m. in Swartz Gym.
