FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College erased a seven-run deficit to post a 9-8 USA South baseball come-from-behind win over Covenant College in the opener, then fell 5-1 in the nightcap today at Panther Field.
The Panthers trailed 8-1 in the fifth inning of the opener, but scored four runs in the bottom half of the frame and four more in the seventh.
Matt Reynolds blasted a two-run homer in the seventh inning for the game-winning run.
Hank Parsley went 3-4 with with a double, a run and two RBI. Reynolds,
Adam Duncan and
Ty Comer each had a pair of base hits.
Starter
Jake Perkins got the win, pitching seven innings with eight hits, four earned runs, four walks and six strikeouts for Ferrum (18-12, 13-10 USA South). Perkins improved to 5-1 with the win and
Jared Talley earned his sixth save after pitching the ninth inning and retiring all three batters he faced.
Scott Gillespie's two-run homer in the first inning gave the Scots (10-16, 7-10 USA South) all they would need in game two. Starter Jonah Paul pitched seven innings to get the win, allowing five hits, an earned run and two walks with two strikeouts. Ferrum and Covenant will play the rubber game of the three-game league series Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
