FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College's men's basketball team needed two overtimes to get past visiting Averett University in the USA South opener for both teams, winning 100-96 tonight at Swartz Gym.

THE BASICS
Josh Grimard's three-pointer with 16 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 74-74 and sent it into overtime. Rashad Reed gave Ferrum an 82-78 lead with 44 seconds left in the first overtime, only to see the Cougars come back and tie the game with a pair of layups in the waning seconds of the period. D'Andre Mullen drilled a three-pointer to open the second overtime, then hit another with 1:12 to go to give Ferrum a 96-93 lead. Averett's Raymond Bullock hit a jumper with four seconds left to cut the lead to 98-96, but Reed was fouled immediately and knocked down a pair of free throws to seal the game and put the Panthers at the century mark on the scoreboard.
